Loving Lord, on this Third Sunday of Advent – Gaudete Sunday – we pause in our preparations to remember the deep joy of your promise.
We pray for those who live in war-torn regions, including those affected by ongoing conflicts – in Ukraine, the Middle East and parts of Africa. We ask God to protect and encourage the humanitarian workers who serve them.
As nations face political uncertainty, humanitarian crises and economic pressure, we pray that those in positions of authority might act with integrity and compassion. We ask God to direct them towards making decisions that promote human dignity and justice.
In this era of extreme weather and threats to our environment, we ask God to grant wisdom to governments, industry and communities; that they might work to protect ecosystems and safeguard the future of our common home. We ask for inspiration to make sustainable choices in our daily life.
In our prayers we remember that many families and individuals are under extreme financial stress at this time of year, and we pray for those who struggle with housing. May our parishes and communities be places where compassion is shown, loneliness is eased and practical, unconditional help is offered.
We pray for those who are suffering or sick, for those in hospital or awaiting treatment, for those living with long-term or chronic illness, and for anyone carrying hidden burdens of anxiety or grief. May they know healing, support and hope through the care of others and the presence of God’s Spirit.
God of joy and promise, hear the prayers we say and the silent ones we carry within us. As Advent draws us closer to the light of Christ, make us people of hope in a troubled world. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
