Bidding Prayers – 23rd August

God our Father, as we bring before you the concerns of the Church, our communities and our world, help us to listen with care, speak with honesty and respond with generosity.

We pray for world leaders and for all those who have influence over the lives of others. May they be guided by God in resisting hostility and conflict in favour of negotiation and reconciliation.

In our prayers we remember those who experience violence in their own homes and relationships. We think especially of those who are frightened, controlled or isolated, and of children who live with fear and uncertainty. May they find safety and practical support, and people willing to listen to their concerns.

We pray for our environment and for those who live with the effects of climate change. We think of the communities in Europe that have been so badly affected by devastating wildfires this summer, and we remember the emergency workers and volunteers who work to protect lives and homes.

As the summer holidays draw to an end we remember pupils and students preparing to return to school, for the parents, carers and school staff who will be supporting them, and for those returning to work after the summer break. May our schools, workplaces, parishes and neighbourhoods be places where people are supported and fulfilled.

We pray for those who are sick, in hospital, recovering from illness or living with pain or disability, and for those whose mental health makes everyday life difficult. We remember those who care for family members. May they find the help, patience and companionship they need.

God of mercy, keep before us the needs of our neighbours and the wider world. Grant us the courage to act, so that the compassion and justice we ask of you may also be seen in the way we live. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
